The Fusion of Precision and Tradition: Developing the Mythic Tin Whistle

A look into how we combine CNC machining and 3D printing to create the Mythic tin whistle series.

The journey of creating a Mythic tin whistle isn’t just about making music; it’s about a technical obsession with airflow, acoustics, and material science. When I set out to develop our signature copper Irish tin whistle, I wanted to bridge the gap between old-world soul and modern engineering precision.

The Hybrid Approach: Why Copper and 3D Printing?

Most whistles are either mass-produced plastic or expensive hand-turned wood. At Mythic, we took a different path.

* The Body: We use copper. Copper provides a warmth and resonance that is unmistakable, but machining it to exact tolerances ensures that every note is crisp and every interval is mathematically 'true.'

* The Head: This is where the real innovation happens. By utilizing high-resolution 3D printing for the whistle heads, I can iterate on the internal geometry—the 'fipple'—with a level of detail that traditional manufacturing simply can't match. This allows for optimized airflow and a more stable 'chiff' (that classic breathy start to a note)

I am thrilled to announce that after extensive prototyping and acoustic re-calculation, the Mythic Key of C Tin Whistle is now officially available. This new addition features a longer copper body to handle those lower, richer frequencies while maintaining the same responsive 'chiff' our players expect.

You can find both the Key of D and the new Key of C whistles in the Mythic shop today.
